چکیده

Monitoring spatiotemporal changes in urban agglomorations will become increasingly important as the number and proportion of urban residents continue to increase. Intra-urban variations in vegetation abundance influence environmental conditions and energy fluxes by selective reflection and absorbtion of solar radiation, by modulation of evapotranspiration and by sequestration of pollutants. The spatiotemporal distribution of vegetation may be effectively monitored with multispectral satellite observations. This study examines spatiotemporal analysis of urban vegetation using a linear spectral mixing model to estimate vegetation abundance from Landsat TM data. The inherent dimensionality of TM imagery of the New York City area suggests that urban reflectance measurements may be described by linear mixing between high albedo, low albedo and vegetative endmembers. Quantitative validation using vegetation abundance measurements from high resolution aerial photography shows agreement to within fractional abundances of 0.1 for vegetation fractions greater than 0.2. A spatiotemporal analysis of vegetation fraction in the New York metro area in 1996 shows intra-urban gradients of several tens of percent and pronounced spatial variations in phenology.

Spatiotemporal analysis of remotely sensed Landsat time series data for monitoring 32 years of urbanization

The world is witnessing a dramatic shift of settlement pattern from rural to urban population, particularly in developing countries. The rapid Addis Ababa urbanization reflects this global phenomenon and the subsequent socio-economic and environmental impacts, are causing massive public uproar and political instability. The objective of this study was to use remotely sensed Landsat data to iden...

Monitoring the Urban Environment from Space

Monitoring spatiotemporal changes in large urban agglomorations will become increasingly important as the number and proportion of urban residents continue to increase. The synoptic view of urban landcover provided by satellite and airborne sensors is an important complement to in situ measurements of physical, environmental and socioeconomic variables in urban settings. The 10 to 80 m spatial ...

Monitoring Urban Greenness Dynamics Using Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis

Urban greenness is increasingly recognized as an essential constituent of the urban environment and can provide a range of services and enhance residents' quality of life. Understanding the pattern of urban greenness and exploring its spatiotemporal dynamics would contribute valuable information for urban planning. In this paper, we investigated the pattern of urban greenness in Hangzhou, China...

Correlations between Urbanization and Vegetation Degradation across the World's Metropolises Using DMSP/OLS Nighttime Light Data

Changes in biodiversity owing to vegetation degradation resulting from widespread urbanization demands serious attention. However, the connection between vegetation degradation and urbanization appears to be complex and nonlinear, and deserves a series of long-term observations. On the basis of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the image’s digital number (DN) in nighttime st...

Spatial dynamics of aboveground carbon stock in urban green space: a case study of Xi’an, China

Greenhouse gas emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the major factors causing global climate change. Urban green space plays a key role in regulating the global carbon cycle and reducing atmospheric CO2. Quantifying the carbon stock, distribution and change of urban green space is vital to understanding the role of urban green space in the urban environment. Remote sensing is a valuable a...
